A blog, or a weblog, is a website that contains a written record of a person or group’s stories, commentaries, advocacies, experiences, and all the other things that one normally records on paper. Blogs have increased in popularity in the past years and people of all ages and generations have become quite addicted to it.

But what really are the reasons why people blog? Does one have to have a special reason for doing so? Does one have to wait for a special occasion in order to make one?

Generally, people use blogs to disseminate information. Information can mean any truth or fact, or belief, from any person or groups of persons. The best example for cases like this is the politician. A politician uses his blog to introduce himself to people. Through his blog, he can share stories that reveal his intentions or plan of action. People will be able to get to know him better if he constantly talks about himself in his blog.

Blogs can also be used as personal diaries. These personal diaries usually reveal a person’s day-to-day activities, including his thoughts and opinions about certain issues and events that take place in his life.

There are also people who use blogs to educate people about their causes. Blogs that promote causes normally share with the readers their advocacies, like the prevention of global warming or the stopping of child abuse. These blogs often narrate stories based on members’ personal experiences and most of the time, are used to entice readers to join their cause or their group.

Corporate blogs are the type of blogs that businesses and companies use not only to reach out to their employees but also (more importantly) to their client. Internal corporate blogs are used to communicate with employees while the external ones are utilized for advertising and marketing purposes.

Blogs that cater to a particular genre are usually meant to solicit support or promote a person’s work; this particularly works for blogs that fall under the music category or photo blog. Music blogs are used to promote a particular person or group’s songs while a photoblog is used to show off pictures. There are also blogs that talk about the latest in fashion (fashion blogs) and those that feature interesting places one can go to (travel blogs).

Some schools and universities also use blogs to help students communicate better with their teachers and administrators, and even with their fellow students.

All these blogs have one goal in mind: to inform the readers.

Whatever your reason for coming up with your own blog, there’s no need to worry. As long as you know what you want the people to know, you will never go wrong. There will always be someone who will find a legitimate use for your blog and the stories that you feature on it.
